170 lbs: Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce
UFC 107 Odds: (-500 Fitch /+300 Pierce)
Two powerful wrestlers will go head to head in the Welterweight division, as Washington’s Mike Pierce gets thrown into the deep end against former title challenger Jon Fitch. While both have strong wrestling backgrounds, Fitch has a huge edge in experience, and Pierce will enter this fight as a huge underdog.
Pierce, a strong wrestler currently riding a six fight win streak, is coming off an impressive decision win over former WEC star Brock Larson in his UFC debut. The staple of his game is his powerful wrestling, but he also sports some pretty good boxing and a very active top game with good ground and pound.
Fitch, who also has a great wrestling game, is a lot more than just a wrestler. Undeniably one of the top Welterweights in the UFC, Fitch brings punishing boxing, a granite chin, and a very underrated submission game to the table as well. He also has the added bonus of having been in there with a lot of top contenders, including current champion Georges St. Pierre.
There really isn’t a lot to say about this fight. Pierce is a promising young fighter, but at this point at least, Fitch is just better at pretty much everything. I don’t think Pierce will be able to outwrestle Fitch, and Fitch will batter him in the standup for the majority of the fight most likely.
Fight Prediction: Jon Fitch via unanimous decision.
